Young people with disabilities sitting in a group circle at a Leonard Cheshire Disability meeting in Asia - © Leonard Cheshire Disability14 – 16 March 2012 Leonard Cheshire Disability and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) are organising the conference ‘Disability-Inclusive MDGs and Aid Effectiveness’ at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok. A call for papers is now open for new or recent work (published or unpublished) on either disability inclusive MDGs or on disability and aid effectiveness.

Bringing together disabled people's organisations, non-governmental organisations, UN agencies, development practitioners and academics, the conference will offer a unique opportunity to develop innovative ways to bring disability into the international development mainstream.

This conference will enhance participants’ understanding of how disability-inclusive development contributes to the full achievement of the MDGs. It will also act as a platform for exchanging lessons learned and ways to improve the quality and effectiveness of development cooperation through the inclusion of persons with disabilities. Recommendations will feed into the regional preparatory process towards the conclusion of the Second Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons in 2012.

The conference will address the following topics:

  • Review of international and regional mandates on disability and aid effectiveness;
  • Challenges and good practices in measuring the impact and quality of disability-inclusive development, including implementation and monitoring of the MDGs;
  • Identifying ways to implement disability-inclusive development effectively on the ground and at the policy level.
