Looking back on the UNESCO conference 2008: "The Way of the Future" Members of the IDDC Inclusive Education Task Group organised a stand at the 48th session of the International Conference on Education in Geneva. Government officials from around the world attended the conference, and it provided an important opportunity to advance action and address the exclusion of many disabled children from education.
The conclusions demonstrated the commitment to inclusion and the importance of international action to help all children get an education. However, NGOs were concerned that there was insufficient recognition of the role of different stakeholders. Civil society has a wealth of experience in inclusion, and more participation by NGOs would have helped to give the discussions a more practical flavour. The Joint Statement on Civil Society Participation sets out our concerns.

We very much hope to engage with UNESCO to contribute to future conferences and ensure that they are more open to civil society input and participatory dialogue.
