Panel discussion 'Women Voices in Disability and Development' New York, 1 February 2012; Conference Room E/NLB, 13:15 - 14:45
On the eve of the high-level meeting on disability and development at the 68th session of the UN General Assembly IDDC will be participating in a panel discussion on 1 February. This event aims to shed light on how gender and disability could be understood and mainstreamed in the development agenda.
The landmark World Report on Disability estimates that 1 billion people have a disability, most of which are poor. This side event to the Commission for Social Development Session will focus on the situation of women with disabilities as they represent a high percentage.
The panel will discuss questions concerning the development challenges that women and girls with disabilities face. For instance, in the labour market, education, vocational training and employment? At home, in terms of a secure and enabling environment? When receiving health care services? How can two cross-cutting development issues – gender and disability – be successfully wedded in the development agenda? What tools are available and which are missing?
