Preview on 3 December celebrations from IDDC member ADD

Programme partners of IDDC member Action on Disability and Development (ADD) report of planned activities in Uganda, Sudan, Ghana, Cambodia and Tanzania.

 

Uganda

In Uganda activities have already been launched by the Minister in Charge of Elderly and Disability. His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Uganda, will be chief guest at an event on 3 December in the Mbarara District. Disabled people will participate in a sporting event, which includes "goal ball" for blind people, a tri-cycle competition and a football match. 

TV and radio talk shows have been broadcast to raise awareness about the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

 

Sudan

Celebrations in the Red Sea state in Sudan begin on 1 December and end on 3 December where arrangements have been jointly organised by disabled people's organisations and the Government, chaired by the State Ministry of Social Affairs. 

 

Ghana

The Ghana Federation of the Disabled is celebrating the day nationally in Bolga, in the Upper East Region of Ghana under the UN global theme: Dignity and Justice. There will be a route march and public gathering addressed by the sector Minister of Manpower, Youth and Employment.

 

Cambodia

The Rehabilitation Department of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veteran and Youth Rehabilitation has worked closely with Disability Action Council, Cambodian Disabled People’s Organisation, ADD and other international organisations in the preparation of a national event in Phnom Penh. Around 5000 people, including government officials, disabled people and school children, are expected to attend the event which will be presided by His Majesty Norodom Sihamony, the King of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

 

Tanzania

The Tanzania Federation of Disabled People’s Organizations (SHIVYAWATA) and other international organisations, including ADD have worked jointly to organise events. At national level celebrations will be held in Dar es Salaam, however individual regions will also celebrate the day.

Events taking place include a workshop, sports bonanza and exhibitions of both art and music from people with disabilities.
