The Platform for Disability and Development Cooperation (PHOS) was founded in 1994 and is recognized as a nongovernmental organization (NGO) since 1998. PHOS aims to contribute to the development and advancement of inclusive societies in the South wherein people with disabilities are given their rightful place as respected individuals. The UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities serves as theoretical framework for all initiatives and campaigns PHOS sets up to promote the rights of people with disabilities.

PHOS is a membership organization open to a broad variety of organizations, individual supporters and sympathizers. In the early years PHOS oriented her activities towards the broad public. Nowadays the organizations focuses more on promoting and advancing awareness of the rights of people with disabilities with policy makers, NGOs and their partners and on the training of those who come in touch with people with disabilities.

The different target groups are:

• The Belgian and European policy makers working in development cooperation

• The Belgian NGOs, the fourth pillar initiatives and its co-workers

• Belgian disability organizations interested in the theme ‘disability in the South’

• Students

• Individual supporters
